Visual Novel Thread

Postby ultama121 » Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:47 am

It appears that aside from a few from a post or two (thank you search function) visual novels aren't too big around here. Hopefully I can pique some interest in this thread.

Visual novels are fairly self explanatory... well almost self explanatory. They're literally novels with visuals, sound effects, music, and more and more commonly, full voice acting. The medium itself initially evolved from the all too infamous "dating sims" which had some similar elements, but are pretty much completely different now... well for one, visual novels have a primary focus on story, not dating or erotic content. However, since visual novels have evolved from dating sims its commonplace for them to have erotic content. Rest assured, visual novels certainly aren't "porn" and I can prove it. Do we have any Key fans here? Any Type-Moon fans? The majority of anime by Key and Type-Moon are adaptations of visual novels, and had erotic content.* The reason I have decided to put this thread in the video games section is because I don't think that this thread really belonged in the H section. Several visual novels don't even have erotic content. If you're not interested yet, prepare to be interested because here come some recommendations!

*This is a side note I feel obigated to put: The vast majority of anime adaptations of visual novels are downright awful. Type-Moon's anime that were adaptations are pretty much all bastardizations of once wonderful stories. Key's adaptations are alright... aside from CLANNAD, which is a bastardization of a looooooooooooong amazing game. All fans of these anime, hold your words 'till you've played the games yourselves. I assure you, they're that much better. Rather than stating all of the poor adaptations here, I'll state them as I list them in recommendations. (All of these recommendations are English translated. If you know Japanese... there's a ton more. Sadly not much of the medium is in English. :< )

Ever17 -the out of infinity-
Image
Ever17 is the tale of seven individuals who come to be trapped 153 feet within the underwater marine theme park, LeMU. During an apparently normal day at the park, a massive accident happens, placing almost half of the facility underwater. The path to the surface and the communication lines are cut off. In addition, LeMU is under constant assault by severe water pressure, limiting time to find a means of escape to 119 hours. Escape is not the only concern, however; many questions arise as to the legitimacy of the accident and whether or not those trapped there were brought there for a purpose.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Image
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

Kikokugai - The Cyber Slayer
Image
This story takes place in an alternative future of Shanghai where money and power rules the city. Mafia groups hire Kung Fu masters and dominate the society.

There are two types of Kung Fu masters, those who mastered their internal qi, and those who mastered their physical skills. The qi masters are able to output a stronger energy coming from their life itself, but it took a long time to master it. It was easier to just train their physical skills, but there was a limit to how strong a human body can be. So there were a balance of many average physical skill masters and few strong qi masters. However that balance broke when cybernetics came into play. Kung Fu masters would replace their body with robotic parts and attain a strength that a normal human can never achieve. That's how no one tried to become qi masters anymore when they can easily become powerful by using cybernetics, and qi masters decreased in numbers.

The main character of the story Kong Taoluo, a qi master, used to be the top assassin of the leading mafia group. He was betrayed and killed, or at least he was supposed to be, but now he returns to city of Shanghai for revenge and for his sister...

Kira☆Kira

Shikanosuke Maejima is a student at the Missionary school, Oubi Academy. He doesn't attend his club, he doesn't put much effort in his studies, all he does is show up at his part time job; in short, his life could be better. One day, he meets a strange girl, Kirari Shiino, at work and before he knows it, they've formed a punk band.

The band consists of Shikanosuke, Kirari, his childhood friend Chie Isurugi, and a rich but weak young lady by the name of Sarina Kashiwara. The four of them are members of the Second Literature Club, which has hardly any active members and is already scheduled to be disbanded. This band is their chance to stand out and give one final farewell at the Culture Festival.

The challenge was foolhardy, but after eccentric training they managed to succeed and rock out the peaceful Oubi Academy with their debut performance. That should have been it.
They were satisfied.
They should have returned to their normal lives.
However, their final performance at a local Live House became a hit on the Internet and requests for their performance start flying in from far and wide.

One problem: exams are coming up and their parents are opposed to the band!

Who cares!

The four of them embark on their final adventure, a long tour of Japan, armed with their dreams and their instruments, all aboard a rickety van that could fall apart at any moment.

Muv-Luv and Muv Luv Alternative
Image

This game consists of two parts: Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited. Unlimited is unlocked after you get the endings of the two main heroines (Sumika and Meiya) in Extra.

Muv-Luv Extra:
Shirogane Takeru is a typical high school student with a lazy attitude and a love for the virtual reality mecha battle game Valgern-on. Even though he didn't really wanted it, he is popular in school mainly due to his daily fights with his osananajimi (Sumika) attracting too much attention. His life takes an unexpected turn when he finds a girl (Meiya) he doesn't remember ever meeting in his bed one morning. Whom later revealed to be the heiress of one of the biggest zaibatsu. She immediately moves to his house and starts changing his life for the good with her one-track-mind and unlimited resources...

Muv-Luv Extra, the main part of Muv-Luv, takes place in the same world (and general area) as Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Kimi ga Ita Kisetsu. The Sky Temple family restaurant is mentioned and visited, and Suzumiya Akane makes an appearance.

Muv-Luv Unlimited:
One day Takeru wakes up late, wondering why Sumika or Meiya didn't wake him up this morning. Not seeing any signs of them he gets a bit worried and goes out of his house to only see the town he lived all his life in ruins. After getting past the initial shock he decides that this must be a dream and decides to enjoy it as much as he can...
http://vndb.org/v93
Not reccomended for beginners.
Muv-Luv itself actually isn't that great at all. Its just a generic moe game... its just a cruel build up for Muv-Luv: Alternative that just happens to be one of the most powerful stories to ever grace visual novels.
Muv-Luv is translated, but Muv-Luv: Alternative is still being translated.

Three years later, Jonathan (now a private investigator working in the former Los Angeles) is visited by his former wife, Lorraine. She asks for Jonathan's help in solving the disappearance of her current husband, Kenzo Hojo, the only clues he left behind being a torn leaf, a set of capsules, and the word "Plato". Symphonic Rain takes place in a fictional city of apparently Italian heritage, where rain falls everyday. The locals there have adapted to this peculiar phenomenon, and carry on with their lives as if the rain was never there. No one takes an umbrella, no one wears a rain coat.

The main character of the story is 17 year old Chris, a Fortelle student of the famous Piova Communal School of Music (Scuola Comunale di Musica Piova, in Italian). Separated from his childhood sweetheart Arietta when he left his home town for the city, he keeps in touch with her through the means of weekly letters. Penning their thoughts on those letters, Chris treasures and keeps her weekly writings, for he had promised her that should his drawer becomes totally filled with them, he would return to her.

The game starts during Chris's third year as a student, a few months before he has to take the school's final graduation examination: a staged performance. As an instrumentalist, he is required to search for a vocalist partner before he is eligible for the examination.

The Tsukihime anime isn't real? Then what did I just buy...

Kidding aside, if I hadn't played Melty Blood then I'd probably have been pissed by how the anime was done. It felt like a cliff notes version of the VN, only stringing along key points into something semi-coherent as a story. I plan on playing the VN pretty soon.

I'll also mention Mirror Moon as a good resource. They deal mainly with Type Moon translations though they do have other projects. They don't host the games (other than the free Bootfighter) just the patches.

I only play visual novels where a girl is the main character, and she's surrounded by plenty of pretty boys. 8-)

I forget some of their names now, I'll post them later. I'm not so good at the Japanese only ones since my Japanese sucks. About a year or two ago I attempted Heart no Kuni no Alice, and it smashed away all hopes I had of playing Japanese only visual novels. I need something with less kanji.

I would've mentioned Mirror-Moon, but they're kinda dead now. :< Farland Symphony, their most recently released project was actually on their backlog to be released for a very long time that some of their staff members just decided to get off their butts and finish. I wouldn't expect anymore projects from them. Their main translator, Takajun, went on to form Yandere Translations, though.

The BALDR FORCE EXE game is actually an all-time classic. Not translated yet, but there's an ongoing project... well unless you know Japanese. :p I see a PASUTADESU going on in your sig. :3

But I really want to try a Key game, like Kanon or Clannad — you have both recommended here.

Definitely go for Clannad. Kanon is great, but Clannad is god-tier. Be warned though, its loooooooooooooooooooooooong and you're going to need a walkthrough to make sure you get everything (which is actually required to move onto After Story, which is essentially a gigantic, but linear part of the game where the most epic moments happen, much like the anime in that sense) This one seems pretty good: http://soukyuu.emevas.net/CLANNAD_guide.html

Otome games, eh? I actually don't know of any good ones. Please do tell if you find some. :)

About a year or two ago I attempted Heart no Kuni no Alice, and it smashed away all hopes I had of playing Japanese only visual novels. I need something with less kanji.

Less kanji? Ehh... don't mean to crush your dreams, but I think the lowest kanji count you're going to find is around 1800 and that's extremely rare and only found in moege (moe-eroge*). The more average count is probably around 2500. What I recommend you to do is use AGTH which allows you to copy and paste text from VNs on the fly. If you find a kanji you're unfamiliar with, plug it into your dictionary of choice. I can't really link AGTH here for various reasons, so err, message me on an IM or PM me if you want it.

*eroge (pronounced ehro-gay) is another common term I forgot to mention which is basically just a general term for a VN with erotic content. Its basically an abbreviation for erotic game.

If anyone here has the liberty of reading Japanese only games, here's a ginormous recommendation list: (that is also somewhat NSFW)

There are even more since this chart is a tad *outdated, but that'll give you a good idea. Look any of them up on VNDB if you're interested.

*Some other must-plays like Subarashiki Hibi and Baldr Sky: Dive 2: "Recordare" have been released since then.

Oh Joey you and your hate of the awesome Tsukihime anime

I'm actually playing Policenauts right now and it's quite a neat game but I haven't hit anything good yet.

As for Phantom, I really liked the visual novel but the anime adaptation is just so well done that it really outshines the VN.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE.
(;_;) In all honesty though, you gotta play the VN at some point. As Emerje said, it basically strings together all of the key points into a cliff-notes like bastardization. It stands on its own as an anime (sorta), but as an adaptation, it fails to capture the spirit of its source material.

Oh cool, Policenauts. I've heard that Snatcher is considered the better of the Hideo Kojima VNs, but I've heard its definitely pretty cool.

As for Phantom, I really liked the visual novel but the anime adaptation is just so well done that it really outshines the VN.

Yeah, I don't blame you on that one. Phantom Integration (which... was like a really extended version of the visual novel) was released way later and never translated. That is supposedly at least on par with the anime.

I know some things. Never had any professional lessons; taught myself everything I know. I know a couple Kanji, but it'd be nice if they happened to provide furigana for my elementary-level skills. :P So I'm not sure if I can play till there's a translation... or maybe I could use this opportunity to practice...

The only reason I was even interested in BALDR FORCE EXE is thanks to I've Sound — KOTOKO, specifically. I'm sure you're familiar with them. ;) "Face of Fact," the game's opening theme, is one of my favorite KOTOKO songs.

Oh yeah, this is where I got my original copy. It's funny how I never noticed the second game at all. D: Cool, thanks, I'll start it down the road.

I've played a few visual novels recently, not usually my pot of tea but if I find a good one I'm all for it.

Clannad- Hate the anime, but like the game. Probably because I don't like Nagisa..

Yo-Jin-Bo- This is one of those ones littlewolf was talking about. A fun time waster (And features the most famous male seiyuu they could find  )

Yume Miru Kusuri- Very good. Better then expected. They went overboard with the H in a Mizuki's route (to the point where it started getting in the way and I was fast forwarding every 15 minutes) but it happened to be the best route story wise imo.

Animamundi Dark alchemist- I only play these when I don't have anything else to do so I haven't managed to get very far in this one yet but it's interesting to say the least.

I want to get around to playing Tsukihime because I really liked the anime and Higurashi for the same reason (however the art in Higurashi makes me want to throw up which is the only reason I haven't gotten around to it yet) and Between this and saying I liked Clannad I might be getting my Key hater badge taken away but their new game looks kind of interesting.

All of Higurashi aside from the music and maybe some programming was done by Ryuukishi, so he did what he could with the art, which obviously isn't that good... fortunately, there are patches that exist that replace the doujin art with the PS2 remake's art, so you actually get something that looks nice like this rather than the old, ugly art.

But yeah, go ahead and check out one of the highly recommended games I have listed, I guarantee you'll find something you'll like. :)

Well I'm simply not interested in most visual novels, to be honest they have to seem exceptional for me to want to play. Cross†Channel looks interesting enough. It would be a hassle to have to mod my psp for it though.

Cross Channel has multiple versions, it just happened that I linked the PSP box art. There's a PC version. In fact, the PSP version isn't even translated. :p Also, if YMK is your standard for very good, then I assure you that you'll find above and beyond that in the highly recommended games. Of course not all of them would fit your tastes, but most of them should, they're highly recommended for a reason. ;)

Ooh and if you do play Cross Channel, as I said, be aware that its very polarizing. Some people will love it, some people will hate it.

E: Hope I didn't seem rude at all in this post. It wasn't really my intention if that's case, its just that err... YMK is definitely considered a good game, just not quite among the greatest.

Haha well Clannad was better then YMK in my opinion. I was just surprised at YMK. But I'll look into Cross Channel if it has multiple versions.

Well I've decided to purchase a visual novel. Despite all of the recommendations above, and some did pique my interest a little, but I ended up foregoing them all :sweat
What ended up intriguing the most (using that db u linked ultima) is this one:
NSFW
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o (Edit: removed image since it's NSFW).
The 2 main things that sold me on it were "female protagonist" and "oneesan heroine"
There's no English version of the game, but I found a translation patch that will allow me to play it in English.

Actually the first two games from the OP Akai Ito and Aoishiro are of big interest to me too and I already found translation project pages for them.
