As for the question of where do I get my Japanese music fix: my pushers...err sources...are Book-Off, CDJapan, YesAsia and (believe it or not) iTunes. Book-Off is a hit and miss affair for me. They have a lot of mainstream J-music but if you hunt hard enough, or get lucky, you can dig up some indie gems. The only indie label I've ordered CDs from is PSF Records. As you many have noticed, I've listed where I get my CDs and "legit" MP3s. I used to get some stuff off of usenet groups but that source has dried up in the past year or so.

"Egao no Hana" by Ueno Juri.... Presumably the same Ueno Juri who played Noda in Nodame Cantabile.

This week they're having a 50% off marked prices for CDs at my local Book-Off. Picked up some CDs for myself and one for my mom. The "blind purchases" I made were "Ongaku" by 19 and "Unreal" by flumpool. I had checked on 19 on last.fm but didn't come up with anything, as far as music videos go, which appeared to be PVs. The other two CDs I picked up, "Scratch" by Kimura Kaela and "Tochiki no Tou" by MUCC, are by artists I am somewhat familiar with.

It was kind of funny listening in on the two young Japanese guys buying CDs there. I'm guessing they're on vacation here in Vancouver and they're going on like "Hey, this is pricey! Wait, it's 50% off. That makes it cheaper than what we can get it for in Japan!". Sure. And what did they select? One guy was going to buy the 19 "best of" album but he went with the Koda Kumi "best of" album instead... ;)

^   That is oh so true!

Of the albums I've recently picked up at Book-Off, the MUCC one is the most disappointing. What can I say? It's a bit forced, pretentious and unintentionally funny (at points). I'm sort of wondering if this one (Tochiki no Tou) was an exception or norm of their musical output. Maybe it's not worth wondering.

Other albums I picked up today:
The Band of the 20th Century - Pizzicato Five
X∞Multiples - YMO (yet another cover of Archie Bell and The Drells "Tighten Up"(?))
Good Morning - SPECIAL OTHERS (pleasant surprise considering it was a blind purchase)
19才 - Suga Shikao (For $1 how can I lose? And it comes with WP jpg images too.)

PS: Don't forget to play in the Japanese music artists Kill and Save game...

I haven't picked up an album by Hamasaki in three-four years or so and I'm not about to start now. But I came across DVD ripped copies of her PVs for "Love Song" and "Last Angel". The songs are so-so and the videos aren't a vast improvement. But they do tell a little story between the two of them. If you come across them and decide to watch them, watch them in the correct order. I did have to smile when watching the guy use a Polaroid camera in the latter video because they don't make the film for those cameras anymore.

Lyrico is releasing a new album later this year, under her older stage name, Harumi Tsuyuzaki. I'm glad she's still making music cause she's one of the more talented jpop artists imo.

Also, I'm waiting for Ayumix 7 to come out or leak. Can't wait for it! Especially Ayutrance 4.

Sorry, it is OT but...

I think it's insanity that not all computers/code/whatever support foreign languages, formats, etc. because GOOD LORD IT'S THE INTERNET! Luckily my computer does, but SERIOUSLY.

She's been really goofy lately but in a cute way. Seems the assault she went through made her stronger not weaker (while the loser who attacked her is rotting in jail.) I can't wait for her new CD. You are awesome Oni Chi!

Came across the official AKB48 store on Takeshitadori in Harajuku. There was a lineup outside and a sign on the door saying "By appointment only". I have no idea as to why that was. Perhaps because it was a holiday.

I saw a poster for the AKB48 premium stamp sets at the post office today. I think the way it goes is that you place your order online and they get mailed to you sometime in February. There are three sets to choose from; Teams A, K or B. They come in mini-albums and I think they include the post cards of the girls plus some other goodies: http://www.postal-jp.com/psc/goods/akb48_2011/index.html

Found this on the Japan Times website: 30th anniversary of the forming of Shonen Knife. Wow. Shonen Knife, an indie rock band from Osaka, have been around in one form or another for 30 years eh. I wonder if the two younger members of the current lineup had been born when the first incarnation of the band came into being.

Wish me luck! I've put in my application to try and score a couple of tickets to see Shiina Ringo in concert this November. I'm not expecting to get tickets so I'll be super delighted if I succeed.
