Re: The official Ani alley japanese music thread!

Postby d.yaro » Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:35 am

A Japanese fellow on last.fm sent me a friend request after noting that I was listening to Chatmonchy. In the ensuing exchange he suggested Perfume to me. After reading their profile I sort of wonder. Anyone here familiar with their material? The only newish Japanese dance pop-ish stuff I've listened to recently is Capsule and while I like them, they haven't exactly set my world on fire...

On a completely different topic (and pop music time frame): I've purchased a number of the Seishun Uta Nen Kan albums over the years as I find them to be an economical solution to collecting old Japanese pop songs (pop, rock, enka, et al). My most recent purchase was the 1982 set as it contained, amongst other things, the song Wedding Bell which was covered by PUFFY a few years back. Another song which I'm familiar with on the album is Yakushimaru Hiroko's Seirafuku to Kikanju ("Sailor Suit and Machine Gun"? Odd title for a song for an idol singer to record if I've ever heard one.) Somewhere else on the album I came across a tune sung by a fellow, Kisugi Takao, with virtually the exact same melody as the aforementioned tune but a different title: Yume no Tochu (Midway in a Dream(sic)). Tonight I listened to the two songs carefully back to back and found much to my surprise they are virtually the same song. Good grief. I'll have to see if the album has a lyric booklet and double check it.

Perfume is produced by Yasutaka Nakata (One half of capsule) but their material is pretty different. They've grown on me a lot

^ Okay...First impression...embarrassingly bad but catchy like drug resistant tuberculosis.  I'm putting them down in my books under the category of "Great Big Guilty Pleasure". Yes, I like them. :) Thanks ZP!

Addendum: Allow me to rephrase my previous statement...They're super catchy!

The only Perfume song I really felt was Baby Cruising Love. I prefer Ami Suzuki's 'One.' They're pretty much the same thing. Not that I don't enjoy the adorable Perfume sound.

I do recommend Ami Suzuki if you're feeling Perfume d.yaro. Similar sound but with sexiness instead of cuteness.

Finally heard Baseball Bear's new album Detective Boys.

AMAZING.

^ Suzuki Ami eh? You're trying to lead me down the road to perdition aren't you Chris?

Found this thanks to a comment an acquaintance made on a photo I posted in Flickr (of all places!).

I'm starting to think that Ami is pretty incapable without Nakata. Reincarnation was a mess and Supreme Show was a stroke of luck honestly.

^Hey that's pretty good!

So I decided to put itunes on shuffle and post whichever jpop song came up first. I

I've really liked them ever since I heard their album "Sunday Girl In Silence"

Oh and as a side note, mostly for Pasta because I know she'll find it vaguely annoying, Yamapi solo album this January.

Okay. So I've actually been listening to a Perfume song for over two years without knowing it. I have a copy of this on my HD which dates back to May 2008. But the video title on the copy I have is in English without any mention of the original group.

I bought a copy of Perfume's first album and their "Love the World" maxi single. I also bought a copy of YMCK's album "Family Genesis". My tongue in cheek observation is that Perfume is the 64 bit upgrade to the 8 bit YMCK...

^^ HOW DARE YOU :P

Her Nakata stuff is great and Reincarnation was the shittiest thing since shit but Can't Stop the Disco and Kiss Kiss Kiss were amazing even with all the sandwich talk in it

Clazziquai Project's Kiss Kiss Kiss is pretty damn sexy too. I just find it strange they can go from perfect English to very bad Engrish.

I give Nakata a lot of crap..All the time  But honestly I love him and every artist he's worked with, MEG and some one off songs/projects being the exceptions, are really bad without him. Now if he could pull out some of that genius for capsule sometime soon, I would be quite grateful.

And Nakata did Can't Stop the DISCO and KISS KISS KISS was done by Tanaka Tomoyuki (FPM) so.. Yeah. Ami kind of NEEDS the very best producers to even be decent. More so than other artists :?

I think Kiss Kiss Kiss was done by World Sketch (another DJ duo I love) while Aishiteru was done by FPM. Totally didn't know Can't Stop the Disco was by Nakata. Didn't sound like his style.

Since I brought up the topic of the JUDY AND MARY song which got used as an anime OP/ED, here it is..."Sobakasu" (Freckles)

Which for the longest of times I had a hard time imagining as an anime OP song:

Footnote: I do have YUKI's "Dramatic" (Honey & Clover song) on her singles compilation "five-star"(sic). No offense I didn't find it to be the strongest tune on the album.

I suppose we could twist some people's arms to get them involved too... Chris? Pasta?

Oh yeah... In that video Matsuura Aya looks so unlike the Matsuura Aya I'm used to seeing. I've always had this picture in my mind of her having this cheerful yet goofy and chipmunk-like expression. I can hardly recognize her there.
