Never saw much of the anime beyond a few episodes, though I really like the manga. The shot of Machi at about a minute in is rather powerful considering her story, and I like the opening and closing shots.

@classicalzawa: I actually prefer the Dutch opening to Oban, it's the Japanese version but with a different mix. Overall though the show is excellent, I miss watching it on Disney.

Another favorite of mine. The imagery of romance and death is subtle but really neat.

And this one I really like just for the lyrics that are in Engrish and such pretty music "I can not touch you, but I can... kill you."

And both Parappa the Rapper anime OP are incredible but prefer 2nd just for Crystal Kay.

Nadesico OP "You Get to Burning" by Yumi Matsuzawa
Always been a big fan of Nadesico and even though the song has aged I still love it and the visuals.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure OP "DUAL!" by HARU&SAYAKA from UNIVERS★LD
On the other hand I think this one has aged pretty well, but probably because it has such an unusual sound to it.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OAV 2 OP "I'm a Pioneer (English)" by Sharyn Scott
I know I've expressed my love for this one before, but here it is again. I the the song itself more than the actual opening, though. I don't think the audio and video mesh very well and the full version of the song is quite good.

Canaan OP "mind as Judgment" by Faylan
I liked the anime quite a bit and rarely skipped the OP when watching. The visuals are very true to the show which is nice.

Basquash! OP 1 "nO limiT" by Eclipse
I find it hard to pick just one favorite song from Basquash! so here's the one that opened half the season. There's something mesmerizing about Japanese girls singing really quickly, especially when it's preceded by a slow tempo.

Toradora! OP 2 "Silky Heart" by Yui Horie
I liked both OPs and EDs a lot, but of the four this was probably my favorite. People were actually surprised to find out this OP contained some sections based on scenes from the show.

Rideback OP "RIDEBACK" by MELL
I really can't explain it, but I was instantly attached to this OP from the beginning. The Engrish is so thick in this song it's hard to tell it's supposed to be English, though.

BTW, does Japan just not do clean/textless OPs and EDs on their DVDs or something? I've been trying to find a clean K-ON ending and it doesn't seem to exist. :(

Am I the only one who didn't know that the Thundercats opening was done by a Japanese animator (Masayuki)? I was surprised when I found out (trying to check out stuff that Masayuki had animated), but once you see the OP it's pretty obvious that it was handled by a Japanese animator, especially that bit that starts on 0:37. lol

Pretty cool. I remember that I was in awe when I watched this OP when I was a kid, but I never really liked the show itself. Now that I'm older I'm back to appreciating it, even without factoring in the nostalgia.

Wow I used to watch that cartoon all the time as a kid, never really realized just how bad ass that opening animation was, and it actually is a non annoying song for a 90's cartoon.

You got me as to whether or not there are NC versions of the K-On! OP and ED. I own the DVDs and there are no extras on them as they were the regular editions. The LE version was on Blu-Ray and I think the extras on them where the little short films.

Well that's too bad, and I wonder if a licensed version would have them or not. You would think considering the nature of the show they'd just put out a music video DVD, but i guess that's asking too much. Only time I can think of that ever happening is the Ranma 1/2 Video Jukebox.

I'm trying to recall which series I have on R2 DVDs which include NC OPs and EDs as extras. The two which I'm quite sure of are Toradora! and Pani Poni Dash!.

Here's an ending theme that I've just recently fell in love with. It's written by KOTOKO but not sung by her.

It reminds me a lot of this ending, another one which I find truly amazing and beautiful

I'm beginning to think a lot of my anime song favorites are rather quite similar sounding.

Hey, good news, the clean OP and ED for K-ON! are on the bluray release it seems. Just got them off a BR batch torrent.

Incidentally, the new OP for K-ON!! (that's season two with the two exclamation marks) is way, waaaay too fast and up tempo, sounds like it's slightly sped up and distorted. Not a good sound.

Kinda disappointing. The ED isn't bad.

Someone posted on the forums that listening to the OP for K-ON!! is like listening to Alvin and the Chipmunks. I'd say that comparison is valid. Though, it's still pretty catchy, so I'd say they got what they aimed for. One thing that does bother me is how they repeat the same frames over and over. It's not that I have a problem with animation loops of 12-?? frames being present in an OP/ED, but somehow this one gets to me. I guess it must be the way that they mix in other cuts in between the cycles and it seems like they're trying to pass it off as something new. It was the same thing for the OP from the first season. I remember being pretty steamed that they repeated the same key frames but with different backgrounds. >.<

There's a new Shippuden OP/ED that debuted this week and the OP is handled by the usual duo (Tsuru=director, Suzuki=animation director). The ED is being done by Koji Masunari. He hasn't done any of the OPs/EDs for Naruto, so I'm curious as to what he'll do.

Even though I posted specific Naruto OPs that I really like, I do enjoy almost all of them. The only one to tick me off was Shippuden OP 5. Tsuru must have storyboarded that thing in his sleep or something because it was so lifeless. It didn't help that they had already chosen a song from the singer just two OPs back and this seemed like a watered-down version of OP 3. At least the 2nd version of that OP with the Sasuke vs. Itachi animation being done by Kenichi Kutsuna gives that thing an actual pulse.

Yeah, I've heard others compare the new K-ON!! OP to the Chipmunks, too. I really hope that was some sort of error, even the animation felt a little fast, especially the parts where the camera is rotating around the band.

Funny thing about it's a little ironic that Shippuden OP 5 is so bad because OP 5 of the original Naruto was my all-time favorite:

Really captured the urgency of the arc. Love the part where Sasuke's hand reaches down and then drops his forehead protector.

Though, I did enjoy the music for Shippuden OP 5, but I can't say the same for the music in Shippuden OP 2. I remember getting really tired of OP 1 and being excited to hear OP 2 for the first time and being greeted by the horrible Engrish "Yew aw my fwen! AH-AH!" and barely making it through the rest of that horrible song.

Shippuden OP 6 is currently my favorite OP of the series, it really sets the tone for the series and completely ignores the filler arc that ran along side it. Only thing I don't like is the way Naruto and Jiraiya are drawn in the beginning

But you know, the new ED may be my favorite. It doesn't really have anything to do with Naruto, but it does remind you that the characters are kids and if this were the real world they'd be doing kids stuff like Hinata is here. Sorry, can't post a good video of it, for some reason these are all posted on YouTube flipped the wrong way.

I did feel that the initial appeal for the first OP wore off fast. I think it must have been the fact that I saw it a bunch of times before even seeing a single episode of Shippuden.

Yeah, the song for OP 2 is not that good.... But the visuals more than make up for it in my book. Even the creepy Sasuke shot with snakes all around him gets a pass due to how good the rest of it looks.

The first shot with Jiraiya and Naruto in OP 6 had me worried when I saw it for the first time. I had heard so many good things about that OP and I thought I was in for a major disappointment. Thankfully, it kept on getting better from that point on. My favorite shot is where Naruto is transforming into the Nine-tailed fox, which I believe was handled by Shingo Yamashita. Wild stuff.

As for why the videos are all flipped, it's because TV Tokyo has asked Youtube to take them down. Youtube has implement a program that can automatically detect a video that's from a series and can have it blocked in how many countries the license holder wants. In order to get around that, people are flipping the videos around.

Goodness, it's been over a year since I've created this thread. Looking back at my choices... uh, some of them don't belong anymore. Mostly the honorable mentions. (That, and I want to make an updated post with inserted YouTube videos!)

New top five openings:

1. "Guardian Angel" – Juno Reactor
Can't beat it. Juno Reactor is so cool. I would watch the opening for every episode of Texhnolyze.

2. "Undine" – Yui Makino
OMG sooo relaxing. What's nice about the song is that it changed settings every episode because it was placed over actual events instead of some repeated animation.

3. "Cloud Age Symphony" – Shuntaro Okino
A catchy song. The visuals are amazing (GONZO, shut up) and Last Exile is the most perfect anime EVER.

4. "Re-sublimity" – KOTOKO
Don't care about the series or actual opening sequence, I just love this song.

5. "rise" – Origa
All of the Stand Alone Complex theme songs are very good, but I think this one is visually the best. Also, Origa is a goddess.

New top five endings:

1. "Over the Sky" – Hitomi Kuroishi
Nothing beats this song for me. Kuroishi's work has quickly made her a favorite because of this song, and others that she has contributed to shows like Code Geass. It's the "softness," I guess. But I think all the music from Last Exile is great. (Also, the "angel feather" version of this song is great.)

2. "Over Night" – Aya Kamiki
I cannot stop listening to this, I swear. I just don't get tired of it. And I'm a sucker for goofy "sad" ending themes.

3. "Brand New Reason" – FLEET
Same reasoning behind "Over Night," though this song feels a little more upbeat. I like the artwork here, too.

4. "Fuhen" – Rin'
I love everything Rin' does, especially their live performances. "Fuhen" is such a sad yet beautiful song. Yet it's slightly more pop than the rest of their stuff, of which the majority is enka.

5. "Yasashii Yoake" – See-Saw
.hack//SIGN had been a favorite series for almost as long as Last Exile has, but I'm still in love with all of the music from the show. This song used to be my No. 2.

P.S. I agree with HK about the Mushi-Shi endings. If I could sneak in on honorable mention, that would be it.

^ Le Chevalier's ending theme put me in a trance every time, it was just so cool and pretty.

Hanamaru Kindergarten episode 10's ending.

Awesome. The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Wicker Man, The Shining, Texas Chainsaw Massacre all in one ending. Brilliant. The song is mesmerizing and the art and animation are downright incredible.

Da Capo first season's final opening.

This song is beautiful. Sure the show sucked for like 20 episodes, but the final 5 episodes are strong and intense which made up for the lame harem of the rest of the series.

Yes a top favorite of mine too although I think it's dropped a few notches on my list of favorite endings, because of the 2 endings I mentioned earlier. So it's probably my 5th or 6th favorite right now.

I don't have comments for your other songs you listed, the only one that peaked my interest was the Chevaleir D'eon ending which I never heard before. I loved the animation in that ending and the song was soothing too.

Also I tend not to like OP songs, so all of those were pretty 'meh' for me ;) , even the KOTOKO one.

One song I haven't mentioned yet is the English version ending to Dominion Tank police. It used to be my #1 favorite ending theme but I was wondering if I should just count it as an honorable mention since it's not original to the Japanese version of the anime.
Here's the song in question:

Hands down, no contest my current #1 ending is still 'Proof' by Mell. It's going to take a very special song to top it and nothing else I've heard quite comes close. But I change tastes in music over time so I may just grow tired of it.

I've started watching Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo and couldn't quite figure out where I had heard the OP tune before. Well, I actually hadn't. But it's done by Ali Project who had done the OP for a short series I had had the pleasure of watching not too long ago, Shigofumi..

Here's the OP for Shigofumi...

Compare that to the OP for Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo...

Almost all of their songs sound the same. There are very few good ones out there, and unfortunately I don't think those two fall into that category.

Strange nonsense I can't shake out of my head... The ED song from D4 Princess which is currently getting coverage from the Shorts Club in MAL.

Okay. Let's figure this out: A minute and a half long ED song for a show that has 7 minutes of actual content. I think each episode used up 9 to 10 minutes of air time.

Trivia point: Both Inoue Kikuko and Kikuchi Masami have lent their voices to this series.
