Favorite Anime OP/ED Themes

Postby Pastachan » Mon Oct 13, 2008 12:47 am

Please share your favorite anime theme songs with us. :) As usual, there is no specific number of songs you are required to list, and YouTube links are also not necessary. These lists are so very hard to do... at least for me they were.

My top five opening themes:
1. Re-sublimity by KOTOKO (Kannazuki no Miko)
2. Guardian Angel by Juno Reactor (Texhnolyze)
3. rise by Origa (Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. 2nd GIG)
4. Undine by Yui Makino (Aria the Animation)
5. Second Flight by KOTOKO (Please Twins!)

Honorable mentions that I must include: Inner Universe by Origa (Ghost in the Shell S.A.C.), Tori no Uta by Lia (Air), Free Bird by Kou Otani (Haibane Renmei), Duvet by Boä (Serial Experiments Lain), and Cloud Age Symphony by Shuntaro Okino (Last Exile).

My top five ending themes:
1. Over the Sky by Hitomi Kurioshi (Last Exile)
2. Over Night by Aya Kamiki (Le Chevalier D'Eon)
3. Yasashii Yoake by See-Saw (.hack//SIGN)
4. Fuhen by Rin' (Samurai 7)
5. date of rebirth by Origa (Solid State Society)

Honorable mentions that I must include: Diamond Crevasse by May'n (Macross Frontier), a little pain by OLIVIA (NANA), and This Love by Angela Aki (Blood+).

Choosing favorite anime themes is tough. There are just so many great ones out there! I'll just choose five in each category to make it somewhat easier.

1) "DAYBREAK'S BELL" by L'Arc~En~Ciel (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)
2) "HOWLING" by abingdon boys school (Darker Than Black)
3) "Rise" by Origa (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig)
4) "Red fraction" by MELL (Black Lagoon)
5) "XTC" by psychic lover (Witchblade)

1) "Waltz" by Suneo Hair (Honey and Clover)
2) "The Girl in Byakkoya - White Tiger Field" by Susumu Hirasawa (Paprika)
3) "You won't see me coming" by Jean-Jacques Burnel (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo)
4) "Daichi no la-li-la" by Yoko Ueno and Masumi Itou (Scrapped Princess)
5) "still doll" by Kanon Wakeshima (Vampire Knight)

1-F-Zero Falcon Densetsu: The Meaning Of Truth. I know you guys must be fantastically sick of it, but what can I do if it's The Truth?

2-Bleach: CHU-BURA. This song's catchy, awesome and full of guitars. A shame it was a filler OP, but I still love it.

3-Captain Tsubasa J: Fighting!. Very few CT fans don't like this song. Made for the best (yet most underrated) Captain Tsubasa remake made. ROAD SUCKS!

4-Blood+: Aozora No Namida. Excellent song, excellent singer, excellent anime.

5-Serial Experiments Lain: Duvet. This song's simply awesome. I also managed to play it on guitar.

Honorable mentions: FMA's openings, Makka Na Chikai from Buso Renkin, Unlimited from Samurai 7, most of Bleach's openings and Heart Of Sword (RuroKen)

1-Rurouni Kenshin: 1/3 Junjo Na Kanjo. This was the song that turned me into a Siam Shade fan. And many of my friends agre it's one of the best EDs around.

2-Bleach: Houkiboshi. Catchy, different and over all... Easy to remember and dedicate. Younha did it all right!

3-Captain Tsubasa ROAD to 2002: BREAK OFF!!!. The only rthing worth mentioning about ROAD is the soundtrack. Otherwise... Eugh. Just eugh. And this is my face ROAD ending.

4-Shaman King: Trust You. Hayashibara Megami, anyone?

5-Shin Captain Tsubasa: Saigo No First Kiss. Corny had never been this good! And the song's pretty nice.

Honorable mentions: Hungry Heart Wind Striker's endings, Heat Guy J's ending 'Hikari,' D.N.Angel's Caged Bird, Nagareboshi (Naruto Shippuden), many of Bleach's endings and Buso Renkin's endings. BOTH of them.

Oh gosh, this is too hard. There are few OPs that I don't like, few EDs I don't skip...these here are in no particular order, though...except that NGE's is really #1 if for no other reason than extreme catchiness and notoriety!

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Just...nuff said.)
2. Cowboy Bebop (Made me want to watch the show immediately)
3. Tehxnolyze (So engrossing, raises a dozen questions before the show starts)
4. Serial Experiments Lain (Everyone likes this one, don't they? I liked it more than the show itself.)
5. Happy Lesson OVA (I just like the very beginning and the underlying beat and the animation. So annoying it's hilarious, like the show.)
6.Trigun (Craziest guitar solo in an op...because the whole thing is a guitar solo!)
7. Chobits (This one just warms my cold stoney heart, music and tender animation.)
8. Vision of Escaflowne (Classic. Also good music and animation together, so pwetty.)
9. Paranoia Agent (AAAH! What-what...oh, Paranoia Agent's on. Okay. Dude...)
10. Kimagure Orange Road OP #1 (I wanna go to Summer Side, too, but now I have a seizure...a happy one.)
11. Outlaw Star (One of my ALL TIME faves for animation + music correlation. I can sing the whole thing.)

1.Kino's Journey (I really like the way it begins. What instrument is that? It so complements the show.)
2.Wolf's Rain (PERFECT summation of the feel of the show.)
3.Wolf's Rain special ep 26 ED (Hauntingly pretty, couldn't forget it.)
4.Utawarerumono (Very very very hauntingly pretty. In case it wasn't obvious, I like my OPs loud and my EDs soft.)
5.Cowboy Bebop (I like her voice. She sounds sad, and the images are great.)
6. Yu Yu Hakusho ED 3 in English (Just a really great English adaptation of the song. They sound quite impassioned and the lyrics are cool. HEE.)
7. Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (One of the most psychedelically AWESOME EDs ever, and it always shoots you out of a cliffhanger that every episode ends on. Watch in High Quality!)
8. Vampire Knight (Perfect encapsulation of the mood again. I like Yuuki as a puppet, she kinda is one.)
9. Fullmetal Alchemist ED #1 (I just like the beat, what can I say? Best FMA song.)
10. Vampire Knight Guilty (Following the trend of its predecessor with even prettier, more symbolic animation to haunt the music.)
11. Cowboy Bebop special episode 26 ED (Heck, while I'm on the subject of special ending songs, how could I forget the one that left me staring at a black screen afterwards for several minutes?)

I'll add more as I remember them... -.-' Apparently, I'm a sucker for peppy techno instrumentation or soft instrumentals or some combination thereof.

Ok well this could get messy but here goes nothing

cruel angels theis (neon genesis evangelion)Come one people it's freaking eva why do I have to explain?
duvet (serial experiments lain) I haven't met anyone who didn't like this song and it's really good.

Futatsu no Kodou to Akai Tsumi (Two Beats and Red Sins) (vampire knight op1) It really adds to the mood of the show and it's super catchy.

Rondo (vampire knight guilty) Even better than the first if you ask me.

Hero's comeback (naruto shippuden) It's just really cool

Tori no uta(air tv) For all the trouble I give moe these next few might surprise you ;)

last regrets (kanon 2006) While the opening video is creepy and looks like it should be illegal with all those loli closeups the song is good. I like the longer 6 minute version a lot more though.

kimi he mukau hikari (zegapain) If only the show was as good as the song.. sometimes mecha anime is better without the mecha.

The world (deathnote op1) I love this song so much so that's why it's here

Hmm can't think of my favorite ed right now

EDIT: I didn't even remember my last post and I didn't see it until I finished this one

Oh my gosh, DITTO! That show has the most awesome trailer on ANN Video.

Love that number. It screams "This show is spectacular!" (And it is, except it doesn't have a conclusion! SUCKY! NOOOOO!)

I always loved the petite cossette (can't spell) music.

I hated the Naruto anime for years, but I have always loved to death one particular ending credit:

Seriously, an anime ending that makes you just want to grab the kid and give him a giant hug and never let him go. That's what this ending did for me, and no Naruto ending has done it since. The song grew on me so much I actually looked up some of Akeboshi's albums. They really nailed down a lonely childhood with this for me.

Utena FTW! Probably my most favorite opening of all time, mainly because I love that song so damn much.

I had to post this one, it's a classic!

I can't help but go "hoeee!" every time I see something Cardcaptor Sakura for more than a minute, nor can I stop myself from singing along.

Wow, I've posted mainly shoujo. ... I miss shoujo.

One of my favorite openings, courtesy of Hidetsugu Ito (KA) and Naoki Sato (music):

If you're talking about those music videos, then let's see: Naruto OP 3, 7, Naruto Shippuden, OP 3, 4, 6 (and those EDs across both series that take place on the beach), Death Note OP 1-2, ED 1-2, Detroit Metal City OP, Yu Yu Hakusho ED 2 (JP), Bleach OP 1, ED 8, TTGL OP, ED 1, Samurai Champloo ED, GITS SAC 2nd GIG OP and many others. It's pretty hard to put up a top 5 of sorts, but these are the ones that come up at first.

The Texhnolyze opening:

The Ghost in the Shell: 2nd Gig opening (can't find a good quality version of it):

Those are the two best openings that I've seen in anime. Nearly unparalleled in musical and visual editing, cinematography, ability to convey characterization and thematic ideas (especially Texhnolyze: there are so many important symbols shown throughout the opening, and you already have a good sense of the characters' personalities that are shown).

The openings for Evangelion, Kemonozume and Kaiba are also damn good. Have a fondness for the openings of Shigurui and The Big O, as well.

As for endings, I've always liked the progression and uniqueness of the ones for Wolf's Rain and Mushi-shi (can't find an example of the latter):

The OP for Kaiba looks very appealing. It's a pity it doesn't appear to have been licensed in R1.

Upon first seeing this sequence, I quickly acquired the DVDs:

Watching this always raises my spirits:

I found that the following OP was a consolation for unwittingly purchasing a dub-only DVD:

I just happen to have an entire list of them posted on my MAL profile, but I'll go over it, post some of the ones I think people won't know or I really like. I'll put vid ones first and none vid ones after.

Astro Boy 2003, but only the first Japanese. English one is ok too.
Bokurano OP, great show too btw, the manga has just started coming out by Viz. Like the lyrics too.
Higurashi no naku koro ni & Kai OPs-at first I thought this was nothing special, but then it grew on me and omg do I love it! I liked both OPs in the end
TTGL OP-didn't think this was anything special at first either, but now it just gets me pumped up for the show, which I think is epic good.
Tetsujin 28 Go [2004] OP and ED (ED more)-the OP is what made me want to buy the series, I like the retro sound of it. The actual visuals of it are horrendously misleading and the OP and ED use the same visuals jut reordered.
Paprika OP-I like it better than the movie itself actualy (only Kon movie I'm not fond of honestly), but man!! Susumu Hirasawa!! And the creativity of it is just awesome
Mononoke OP-it's just cool man! still not sure what it really had to do with the series itself though.
Oban Star-Racers, it actually uses no footage from the show itself
Legend of the Galactic Heroes...pretty much all OP and ED except maybe the 4th OP. I've only put the 3rd OP here cus I think it's the best of them all.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OP 2, it's obligatory. Does anyone have any idea wtf was going on with this OP? Or the first one for that matter? I actually like the 2nd OP more than the first.

Baccano! OP, pretty sure you've all seen this one.
Cowboy Bebop OP & ED, how could I not? Sure you've all seen these too.
Cromartie High School, I'm guessing a good half of you have seen it, it just draws me into the show so much somehow.
Eden of the East-betting a lot of people saw it too, I really didn't like the show, but even I must admit the OP is awesome.
Goldenboy, not sure why, kind of goes in stark contrast to the pervertedness of the main. I just like it.
GTO OP2, guessing a lot of you have seen this one too.
Kaiba OP (it's above)
Outlaw Star-it was a Toonami show, also guessing it's been seen
Revolutionary Girl Utena OP & ED1-OP is above
Pokemon OP 1-c'mon, we know we all like it and that we can all sing along to it.

I happened to stumble upon the Bokurano OP when I was adding credits to Shingo Yamashita's profile on ANN a short while back. The shot at 0:50 with the boy who's running was the piece of animation that got stuck in my mind afterwards. Checked out to see who did that and it turns out that it was done by Osamu Tanabe. Very nice work there.

Bokurano looks interesting to say the least. I'm hopeful that some company might try to release it.

Two OPs from "Pani Poni Dash!", that wonderful anime ode to the theatre of the absurd:

"Shoujo Q"...which definitely bears no resemblance to "Shoujo A".

And the equally nonsensical "Kiiroi Vacances".

I couldn't find the NC versions of these which were on the last DVD. Those versions were even a bit more odd.
