Rate the music above you

Postby chrisb » Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:28 am

Fun game that allows you to shove your favorite/most hated songs in the faces of others while others can find new stuff to love or to avoid  I see nothing wrong with being honest if you think the song above you sucks, this is all in good fun.

If possible put a youtube or streaming audio link.

I've played Rate the AVatar/Sig above you games before but this is a nice switch. Might go make the other ones in the games section too.

9/10 for yours Chris. Really liked the beat and her voice is simply gorgeous. Soothing and melodic and just beautiful. Made me think of anime scenes where ya have a night time festival or carnival for some reason. Haven't watched much anime these past 6 months (been in a rut) but lately I've been getting my passion back. This song for some reason makes me want to watch it more again too. o_O So thanks Chris lol.

As for me I just watched the episode of family guy where they start it off with Barry Manilow. I am not afraid to admit I love Barry. So the hell with you haters lol. So here's a favorite. "Ready to take a Chance Again"

3.5/5: It's the kind of love song that always gets mocked, but it has a lovely arrangement.

Let's see how you like my music

Whoa...Roger Dean cover art. That's going back a long, long, long ways. Very "Queen-ish" tune there. By that I mean it's an example of that genre mixing classical music vocal forms and rock genre motifs. My impression of it is that it's technically accomplished but a bit distant emotionally. Score: 7/10.

Anyways, here's my tune selection...

I'm ranging between an 8/10 and a 10/10, so I'll average it to a 9/10. At first listen, the way some of the lyrics was sung sounded a little awkward and the voice too a while to get use to, but the light guitar work really makes the song great.

7.5/10 Love me some 80's and I do like Kate Bush. Not my favorite from her but still a fun song to listen to. This is what last.fm just tuned on for me;

Plumb - Cut

I actually really like Plumb, my favorite song by her is 'In Your Arms.' Haven't heard this song before and sadly not feeling it but I do like the lyrics.

7/10

8/10 Not familiar with it but I really liked the beat and the ladies voice. Made me think of a smokey after hours club for some reason. It also made me think of Jamiroquai who I love so and extra point for that heh.

Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust The music video I think is just beautiful and very unique.

Whoa, Nelly. That's a good one. The PV adds a lot of "umph" to the tune. Even without it though that's a good song. Taut, chilling and beautiful. Very heartfelt. I give it a 9/10.

This one is going to have the next reviewer wondering what the heck is going on here. Background on this song: It's called "Kuchibiru Network"("Lip Network") and it was composed by Sakamoto Ryuichi with lyrics written by Matsuda Seiko. It hit #1 on the Oricon charts in Japan on Feb 10, 1986. About two months later, on April 8, 1986, the singer, Okada Yukiko, committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the Sun Music Building in Tokyo. She was 18 years old and left no suicide note.

9/10: I've always had a fondness for 80s JPOP (wish it was easier to find though) It's sweet, charming, and very different from anything else. It's quite sad to see her give such an energetic performance only to die so shortly after. I can only imagine the pressures of the entertainment world on such a young girl were too much, but who really knows.

8/10: It's a very good pop song. The music reminded me a little of U2's Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Off and it's always interesting hearing a j-pop singer sing in English.

I'm giving it 7.5/10. It was great. It was soaring. I really liked it. Ten minutes later I couldn't remember a note of it. (Sorry!) I believe that's one of the inherent weaknesses of instrumental pieces. It takes several listens for a piece to really sink into you.

Here's Kudo Shizuka, Onyanko Club graduate and one of the top idols of the late 80's/early 90s, belting out "MUGON...Iroppoi" in her spring 1990 concert.

PS: I do love this concert. Copied it off of LD onto VHS tape and then had a friend dub it onto DVD.

9/10: This song has my favorite arrangement out of all the others I've heard. I normally don't like the sound of slap bass and digital strings but I thought this song used perfectly, without over doing it. I also liked the use of other percussion instruments (even if they could be digital) and I liked how the song ended on a somewhat off note. The only knock against is that I thought the guitar part sounded very bland to me.

Technically, this is two songs, but they flow into each other so well that it would be awkward to play either one by itself

8/10 Wasn't really liking it at first but the second song really grabs you.

7/10: I can't remember ever hearing an acoustic guitar processed with guitar effects. That sounded pretty neat. Unfortunately, that's all I took from the song (sorry).

It's not bad. I don't think that particular recording did the song justice. Hackett's vocals didn't stand out in the mix at all. Which is unfortunate since the lyrics were quite personal and reflective and deserved to be at the forefront. The intro to the song was so long for a bit I thought it was going to be an instrumental tune. The jangly guitar line was quite catchy and relatively memorable. I'm giving this one a 7/10.

Another Japanese pop oldie: Yamaguchi Momoe's 1973 single "Aoi Kajitsu", her second single, which peaked at #10 on the Oricon charts. From Wiki: "Momoe fans and Japanese pop culture historians alike have accredited the suggestive lyrics of the song to its success. The chorus goes "You can do what ever you want with me, it's ok if rumors spread that I'm a bad girl". All of this coming from a 13 year old Momoe."

^ Just so you know, Steve Hackett isn't the guy providing the vocals, he's just playing the guitar. The one singing is Steve Walsh of Kansas.

As for the song, even though it sounds like every other orchestral pop song I can think of (reminds me of James Bond) the vocals make it work for me. I'll give it 8.3/10.

I'll raise you one Yamaguchi Momoe song with another

7/10: I liked the atmospheric feel of the song at first, but it dragged on far longer than I thought it should have.

9/10. I think that's the first Coldplay song I've ever heard that I thought was actually pretty cool sounding, heh heh. I like Coldplay, but not typically for the same reasons as I liked this song, so it was kind of refreshing to hear a song like that from them.

Listened to a lot of Isis today while scrobbling on Last.fm, so here's pretty much the music video that first got me into them.
