"Smaller" Stories

Postby d.yaro » Sun Jul 26, 2009 6:11 pm

A thread for those small new stories that make you pause for just a moment...

Starting off with a news story about a cruise ship which arrived in Vancouver with a fin whale impaled on its bow: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2009/07/25/bc-cruise-ship-whale-impaled.html. While it's nice to know that we have fin whales swimming off our coastline it certainly isn't nice to know they're being run down by ships.

"The cat did it." Investigators find over 1000 child porn images on a man's computer. He claims he left the room and found "strange" things on his computer. He claims his cat jumped on the keyboard while he left the room while downloading music. Oh yeah...

Maybe the cat meant to type "kitty porn" in his google search and accidentally mispelled it "kiddie"
But yeah, what a loser.

A Brooklyn mom uses Facebook as a tool in getting her son's stolen bicycle returned. I was slightly amused by her son's "So what if it got stolen"(sic) attitude.

This story immediately reminded me of a scene from the movie "Amelie"...except this time it's tragic.

Testosterone drives men to buy fast cars. I'm not 100% in agreement with the conclusion drawn by the story's headline (the subjects of the study didn't buy the fast car used in the study, they simply got to drive it). All in all, I find this to be a touch amusing.

Guess I'm too girly as I'd rather go for a nice smooth, high performance, comfortable luxury car that I can relax in. Dang. There goes my manhood.

Call to 9-1-1 leads to drug bust. Just brilliant...
cbc.ca wrote:Police answering a 911 call about a home invasion in East Vancouver Wednesday found no break-in suspects when they arrived but did discover 107,000 ecstasy tablets, some imprinted with the Olympic rings symbol.
Either the two who got arrested are really stupid or someone decided to take them down by using the 9-1-1 call as a cover for a tip-off to the police.

^ How the hell do you drive when you are so shocked you don't know what to do? If you are that capable you can easily call 911 (well the Japanese equivalent I suppose.)

Yes because she's never said worse things that were IN context.

This is plain simply tragic. I feel sorry for everyone mentioned in the story: the woman, her stillborn children, her family and friends, and their community. US police say woman hid triplet pregnancy, died delivering stillborn babies

A case of a misleading headline: "Ancient tribe dies out in India's Andaman islands" should probably read "Ancient tribal language dies out in India's Andaman islands".
