Official Football (Soccer) Thread

Postby Psycho 101 » Sun Oct 12, 2008 12:41 pm

I know around the world football (soccer) is the dominant sport, and that some members here are die hard fans. So what teams are you voting for? I am looking forward to the US against Cuba game coming up. Maybe I can catch it on On Demand somewhere.

Colombia lost once again...

I hope they don't blow it against Brazil on Wednesday... That'd be a death sentence!

By Colombia you mean the national team as opposed to more regional teams right?

Well Canada got eliminated from World Cup regionals (CONCACAF). This time around it looks like we need to level our guns at the CSA (Canadian Soccer Association). There have been some pretty harsh critics of the organization in the press. They're not going to be any more quiet now. Our club entry, the Montreal Impact, in the CONCACAF Champions League is a win away from qualifying for the quarter finals. And our national mens team blows two home games. I think we claimed 1 out of 9 possible points in the first 3 games of qualifying play. The success of the Impact highlights what we can do with a well coached and disciplined team. The national team is a mess: One player left the team because the coach couldn't be bothered to tell him he was going to be benched. The CSA hired a Canadian coach whose Canadian U-20 team failed to score a single goal at last year's FIFA U-20 World Cup.

In the meantime I was quite happy with our local USL-1 team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, as they captured the league championship yesterday afternoon. Yes. I was at the game. Photos I took at the game are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8936205@N02/sets/72157607981659359/

Canada tied Mexico yesterday in a game that meant diddly squat to me as a Canadian soccer fan. We're not going to be playing in South Africa. The situation is truly ridiculous. I wonder if Canada will qualify for the World Cup within the rest of my lifetime. The last time we qualified was over 20 years ago and we didn't score a goal at the tournament. Arrrrgh!

Montreal Impact are on to the quarter finals of the CONCACAF Champions League. At last! Some good news for Canadian soccer fans.

In the meantime Becks is off on loan to AC Milan from the Galaxy. Some pundits are saying that the loan will eventually become permanent. Don't know. Yes, I would agree that the level of competition is higher in Europe. But we need big names over here to build the game too. I guess it'll be a wait and see situation.

Okay... So that was 90 minutes that didn't solve anything. Canada 1 - Colombia 1. Both teams need to win their final matches to advance to the next round.

Canada makes it into the quarter finals of the Womens U-17 World Cup by virtue of a 0-0 draw with Denmark. Things don't look good for Colombia. They were in third place in the group. I suspect that even if they win their last match they won't qualify for the next round.

No use worrying about that.

It's true they didn't make it, but I still feel proud of the girls.

A Class Act, an article about Real Madrid fans. I found it to be a good article about a soccer culture in one city that is quite remarkable. But what I really liked was the photograph that accompanied the article:

After that, how can people just think that football is a waste of time?

I can talk about college soccer can I?

The field for the NCAA D-1 Men's soccer tournament was announced a few minutes ago. Colgate made the field (yay :D :D :D ) and will face Boston College in the first round. We have an overall record of 12-5-3 and Boston College has an overall record of 10-7-2 so this should be an interesting game.

Okay, Colombia has a new football champion. América de Cali.

I wish it had been Junior, but eh well...

Which one would that be? If I remember correctly there are two separate championship and then an overall one (I think that's how it works)
