Official NHL Thread - 2015-2016 Season

Postby d.yaro » Thu Oct 29, 2015 9:59 am

Well, hockey season is underway...not that I've paid too much attention. ;) I admit to being distracted by the Blue Jays. And I'm still keeping tabs on the Whitecaps (soccer). Anyways...two things that stuck out in the past ten days in my mind from the world of hockey...Ovechkin and the Caps took care of the Canucks...handily I heard...and the Canucks managed to avoid a total wipeout on their first extended homestand of the season by stopping the Habs from getting 10 straight wins. :)

Canucks handed the Flyers a loss. It was the end of Vancouver's homestand. One of the rookies, Virtanen, got his first NHL goal. Nice response after he found out he wasn't going to be sent back to junior hockey.

Meanwhile over in Cowtown, the Flames are making life miserable for themselves. Only 5 points in 10 games. The odds of them making the playoffs don't look to good...already.

I never thought the Canucks would be at the top of their division at this time.

Ha ha....Virtanen and McCann got a roasting before being informed they made the team and not being sent back to Juniors.

McCann is leading the team in scoring

Kind of surprised to see that after going through a disastrous December and where a lot of key players are injured, the Canucks are still in the mix to make the playoffs.

and what's going on with those Canadiens ?

As of right this moment, the Canucks are the only Canadian team in a playoff position. We're just past the halfway point of the season.

A few days ago, none of the Canadian teams were in a playoff spot. I'm sorely disappointed to say the least. Especially with the Habs. The Laughs (Leafs) on the other hand haven't disappointed me.

There are 3 Canadian teams at the very bottom of the standings duking it out for the first draft pick. This year's draft has maybe two really good players. It's not a deep one. What are the Oilers going to do with all those great young first draft picks ?

Methinks it might be time for the Oilers to take a good look at all the former first round picks they've got. See if they're really getting their money's worth out of them. I'm not suggesting they unload the whole lot but the numbers aren't showing much improvement over the past five years.

The Canucks have improved their chances of getting the first overall pick. :o

I don't think they could possibly tank enough to beat out Edmonton and Columbus though. :sweat But 13% odds on the lottery ain't bad.

Last time I looked the Canucks were at 11% odds of winning the draft lottery. Can't get any better than that. Toronto and Edmonton have locked up the last place positions in each conference.

For Canadian teams, thankfully, the season ends.

So the Leafs got the top draft spot and the 'Nucks slid down to 5th. First time the Leafs get to pick first since when they picked Wendel Clark first overall back in 1985. ;)

2016 NHL Draft Order:

1. Toronto Maple Leafs
2. Winnipeg Jets
3. Columbus Blue Jackets
4. Edmonton Oilers
5. Vancouver Canucks
6. Calgary Flames
7. Arizona Coyotes
8. Buffalo Sabres
9. Montreal Canadiens
10. Colorado Avalanche
11. New Jersey Devils
12. Ottawa Senators
13. Carolina Hurricanes
14. Boston Bruins

^ That's going to be a fun series. I haven't a clue as to what might propel either team to victory. But it sounds like Phil Kessel is playing with a lot more life in his game. Two goals in the deciding game ain't shabby....

The Habs traded P.K. Subban. I just don't get it. As for the Oilers. How about 'em eh? Dumped Taylor Hall and signed Milan Lucic. Things will be interesting there this coming season. I don't know about unloading Hall. There's another former number one pick I would've rather unloaded.
