Official NHL Thread - 2013-2014 Season

Postby d.yaro » Mon Sep 23, 2013 10:16 am

The draft, free agent season, summer, and training camps are over now. We're right in the thick of pre-season play now...time to brag and moan about your favourite NHL team for another 3/4 of a year. ;) Things will be different this year what with the new division and conference line-ups. Of course, yours truly here will be hoping a Canadian team can claim Lord Stanley's mug next spring but there's plenty of drama and action to go through before that gets settled. Let the games begin!

Canucks aren't looking very good in pre-season play so far this year. I think that one win against Phoenix was an anomaly.

I wasn't aware the Canucks have won only one pre-season game so far. I know they got their rears given to them in Edmonton though.

Regular season underway and both the Caps and Sabres lose game 1. Sigh. There are pluses to be taken from the games though.

The Caps game was high scoring, but even so Holtby made some damn fine saves. The way the Hawks were shooting they could have scored 12 goals had he not been on his game. One of their goals was open net too so that doesn't count. Another plus were WHO scored for us. Ovey started the season with a goal and Green had 2. That is very good news they both are starting where they left off. Grabvoski scored as well which is a good sign since he replaces Reibeiro. And our PP was scored 3 times which is also good and continuing from last year. We may have lost but we pushed Chicago to the limit. Plus it was their season opener, at home, and they were raising the banner and having their ceremony for winning the Cup so their emotional support was as high as it could be. No surprise they won honestly. Our home opener is tonight so this will be a good game to watch. Especially against Calagary going through a rebuild.

As for Buffalo they struggled on the PP. I mean 7 chances and not one goal....ouch. However much like Holtby Miller had some great saves and kept Buffalo in it. Their young players looked pretty good. Still room for improvement but they looked good. And their only goal was from one of their centers from last year's draft. Girgensons in his first NHL game. Congrats to him. It's interesting they named Ott and Vanek co-captains. Vanek at home and Ott on the road. That tells me they are interested in keeping Vanek next year provided his level of play rises some.

With realignment, and new coaches, the Canucks are not in the realm of the top teams this year. However, other than losing to Sharks twice and then to Montreal, they aren't really doing too badly. It looks like they are starting to get familiar to the new system. But there is still a long season ahead.

I read on the CBC website that the current 5-3-0 start to the season that the Canucks have is their best since 2005. Unfortunately, for some, the Flyers and Sabres are amongst the teams they've defeated so far. Nonetheless, we'll see where we're at in January eh.

Yeah, how bout them Flyers? Jeez, now I kind of regret getting partial season tickets. They're 0-3 in the games I have been to.

^ Were you at the game on Thursday when they beat the Rangers? If I'm not mistaken that was their first home win this season.

Last game I was at they were playing Pittsburgh. I swear at one point the Flyers were being out shot 25-8. If it wasn't for Mason the game would have been over mid-way through the second period.

The Canucks are doing better than I expected. Probably not the top team in the league right now, but for a team where 6 for their regular forwards are injured, they are doing very well. Burrows was back for their last game and he added, what I felt as a totally different dimension to the Canucks' game.

Also surprised to hear this was their best start (first 10 games) since 2005.

Hopefully, they will improve as the season goes on and make the playoffs.

"I'm loving it!" :D

Canucks retire Pavel Bure's #10 and then go out and hammer the Leafs. Reimer kept the Leafs in it while they got outshot 11-0 in the first 10 minutes or so. He made a brilliant desperation save on Alexandre Burrows...with the emphasis on "desperation" as he was fully extended to his physical limit and literally looked like he stopped the puck with the tip of his toe. Whoa...

As for the shellacking the Flyers got from the Caps...no comment. But Flyers goalie Emery's fight with his Caps counterpart Holtby?...didn't see that one coming. That certainly was interesting.

I don't think Holtby saw it coming either. That was absolutely stupid of Emery to do that. Hockey players get into fights because of loss of composure in very emotional situations in the heat of playing. A player premeditating to just go and beat up on somebody is assault in any real world situation and is not entertaining at all, especially in a hockey game.

Little late, but I was surprised that Holtby got a major for fighting in that game. Thought that the Capitals were about to get a nine minute power play.

Oh look, the Flyers are starting to win. From one of the worst teams in the league to fighting for a playoff spot. Maybe the next game I go to they will win.

Looks like the NHL season has turned ugly.

The Boston Pittsburgh game yesterday saw a downed player get kneed in the head and an unsuspecting Brooks Orpik get pulled down from behind by Shawn Thornton when play was stopped and punched in the face a few times, knocked out and got taken off the ice in a stretcher.

This isn't hockey anymore.

I was at a relative's place for dinner tonight and caught an interesting statistic on the Vancouver Canucks at the Christmas break.

This season (2013/2014) at the Christmas break, the Canucks have 50 points. with a 22-11-6 record
last season (2012/2013) at the Christmas break, the Canucks have 50 points
the season before (2011/2012) at the Christmas break had .... 50 points.

^ Um...the 2012-2013 season didn't start until January 19,2013. I'm presuming the 'Nucks had 50 points in each of the last full seasons...

Bah... Canucks lost to Philly. I had checked the score when it was 2-2 and then didn't get back to the game until long after it was over.
